Three Golden Eagles Named Fall 2014 Skyline Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year

New York, N.Y. – Three St. Joseph’s College student-athletes have been named 2014 Skyline Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective fall sports.   The SJC honorees are Christian Bleck of men’s golf, Julianne Tierney of women’s volleyball and Lauren Waka of women’s cross country.

Seven Skyline student-athletes were named 2014 Skyline Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year with St. Joseph’s leading the pack with three honorees.  They were trailed by two winners from Yeshiva University and one each from Mount Saint Mary and Sage.

A Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in each fall sport is presented to the first-team All-Conference performer who carries the highest grade point average (minimum 3.30) for the fall semester in the sports of soccer, cross country, women's tennis, men's golf and women's volleyball.

Christian Bleck won the individual title by two strokes at the 2014 Skyline Golf Championship at Bethpage State Park as he finished eight-over par with a two-round total of 148.

Julianne Tierney averaged 7.40 assists and added 73 kills and 45 services aces as St. Joseph's volleyball team earned 19 wins in 2014.  The senior from Bethpage, N.Y., is a repeat winner of the Women's Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

Lauren Waka finished runner-up at the 2014 Skyline Women's Cross Country Championship on Oct. 26 in a time of 20:28.06 on the 5,000m course as St. Joseph's seized its fifth consecutive Skyline title.  The senior earns her second consecutive Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor.

Last week, fifty-five student-athletes from St. Joseph's were named members of the Skyline Academic Honor Roll for the 2014 Fall season.  That total was the most among all Skyline Conference institutions.
