Three Golden Eagles Earn Skyline Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The following nine student-athletes have been named the 2013 Skyline Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective fall sports:

Men's Soccer: Sean Lockwood, Mount Saint Mary
Women's Soccer: Ashley George, St. Joseph's-L.I.
Women's Tennis: Nicole Riley, Sage
Men's Golf: Matt Pollock, Farmingdale State
Women's Volleyball: Joanie Cooney, Sage / Julianne Tierney, St. Joseph's-L.I.
Men's Cross Country: Juan Reyes-Alvarez, Sage
Women's Cross Country: Lauren Waka, St. Joseph's-L.I.


A Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in each fall sport is presented to the first-team All-Conference performer who carries the highest grade point average (minimum 3.30) for the fall semester in the sports of soccer, cross country, women's tennis, men's golf and women's tennis.     

A senior midfielder, Lockwood tallied six goals and 10 assists in leading Mount Saint Mary to the program's first-ever Skyline men's soccer crown and a berth in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.  Lockwood also earned ECAC Metro Region first-team distinction. 

George earns Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for the third straight season.  The senior defender started 23 contests and was named to the ECAC Metro Region first-team for her efforts.  

Riley won six matches at the No. 2 singles flight and enjoyed an 11-4 mark at the No. 1 doubles position as Sage advanced to the semifinals of the Skyline Women's Tennis Championship for the first time since 2009. 

Pollock earns his second consecutive Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor after finishing third at the 2013 Skyline Championship with rounds of 77 and 72, respectively, as the Rams earned their sixth consecutive league title. 

A senior setter, Cooney amassed 570 assists and 169 digs as Sage claimed the 2013 Skyline regular season volleyball crown and advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Championship.

She shares the honor with Julianne Tierney of St. Joseph's-L.I., who averaged 8.38 assists per set and compiled 49 assists on Nov. 9 as the Golden Eagles captured their first Skyline Women's Volleyball Championship since 2003 with a dramatic 3-2 win over Sage. 

Reyes-Alvarez placed third overall at the 2013 Skyline Men's Cross Country Championship on Oct. 27 with a time of 28:33.00 on the 8,000m course for his second top-five finish in as many years.

Waka finished fifth overall (20:38.68) on the 5,000m course as St. Joseph's-L.I. seized its seventh Skyline Women's Cross Country Championship in eight seasons.
