Ferchland and Wehrli Claim Player of the Week Honors

New York, NY| The Skyline Conference released its list of weekly award winners on Monday afternoon, and among the honorees were seven St. Joseph’s College (L.I.) student-athletes, including Heather Ferchland and Rita Wehrli, who were named women’s volleyball and women’s cross country Player of the Week, respectively. Additionally, Ryan Haun, Victoria Makulik and Erin MacDonell earned Rookie of the Week honors in their respective sports, while Brittany Guttieri, Katie McGarrell and Courtney Wickline appeared on their respective Weekly Honor Rolls.

Heather Ferchland (Sr.) – Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week 

Middle hitter Heather Ferchland recorded a season-high 19 kills in a 3-2 win over Potsdam on Saturday afternoon in what was the highlight of a weekend that saw her rack up 70 kills through six matches. The senior also notched 13 kills in both matches of a Skyline tri-match against Yeshiva and Maritime on Sunday. Ferchland is Player of the Week for the eighth time in her career.

Rit Wehrli (Jr.) – Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

A two-time Skyline Conference Honor Roll honoree, junior Rita Wehrli takes home Player of the Week accolades for the first time in her career. The Medford, NY native posted a 3-0 singles record and a 1-1 doubles record last week, helping the Golden Eagles to a perfect 3-0 week. Wehrli did not drop a game, winning her singles match 6-0, 6-0 against New Rochelle on Monday.

Ryan Haun (Fr.) – Men’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week

Freshman Ryan Haun finished 10th—first among Division III runners—in  a field of 101 Division II, III and junior college competitors at the LIU Post Invitational on Saturday morning, posting a 27:53.68 in his first-career 8k race. The Bayport, NY native was Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week for the first two weeks of the season.

Erin MacDonell (So.) – Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week

Erin MacDonell was selected as women's cross country Rookie of the Week for the second time this season after finishing 24th out of 122 competitors at the LIU Post Invitational on Saturday. The sophomore's 21:04.2 time was seventh-highest among Division III runners.

Victoria Makulik (Fr.) – Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week

Victoria Makulik posted a perfect 3-0 singles record and a 2-1 doubles record last week to help the St. Joseph’s women’s tennis team earn a 3-0 record last week. Her wins against Bard College on Saturday came in the #1 singles and doubles matches.

Courtney Wickline (Jr.) – Women’s Volleyball Honorable Mention

Junior setter Courtney Wickline amassed 161 assists in six matches last week and set a career-high with 53 in a win over Potsdam on Saturday. Wickline currently leads the Skyline Conference in assists with 375 and appears on the Honor Roll for the first time in her career.

Katie McGarrell (Sr.) – Women’s Soccer Honor Roll

Women’s soccer team keeper Katie McGarrell posted a 1-1 record last week, allowing just one goal between the two contests. The Selden, NY native made three saves and earned the shutout in a 2-0 over Brooklyn on September 14, and she made seven saves in a 1-0 loss to Mt. St. Mary on Saturday. This is the second Honor Roll selection for McGarrell so far this season.

Brittany Guttieri (Sr.) – Women’s Cross Country Honor Roll

Last week’s Skyline Conference Runner of the Week, Brittany Guttieri –who also competed at the LIU Post Invitational on Saturday—finished 15th out of 122 competitors. Her 20:27.27 5k time was the second-highest among Division III competitors.
