Eagles Top Maritime to Advance to Skyline Double-Elimination Tournament

Patchogue, N.Y. – Third-seeded St. Joseph's College (20-19) defeated #6 Maritime College (17-16), 8-3, in the opening (single-elimination) round of the 2012 Skyline Conference Baseball Tournament and advanced to this weekend's double-elimination tournament to be held at Farmingdale State College.  The Golden Eagles will play #2 Old Westbury Friday at 7:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to the 10 a.m. game Saturday morning.

St. Joseph's got six innings of five-hit ball from starter Robert Hyde (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon), who allowed three runs (none earned), four walks and struck out six, improving his record to 4-2.  Jonathan Beekman (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) pitched three innings of scoreless relief allowing only one hit and striking out two for his second save of the season.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first when Anthony Delury's (East Rockaway, N.Y./East Rockaway) groundout drove in Dennis Nover (fresh Meadows, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) who tripled to lead-off.  Maritime quickly responded in the second by putting three runs up on a combination of a single, two walks, an error, a wild pitch and an RBI groundout.

St. Joseph's answered back in the bottom of the second to change the ledger to 5-3 in their favor, courtesy of two hit batters with the bases loaded, an RBI single by Rich Pecoraro (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) and a sacrifice fly from Prateek Thaman (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge ).  Thaman also had an RBI base hit in the fourth to score Brian Hannigan (West Babylon, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), who had stolen second and advanced to third on a failed picked off attempt by Maritime.

The home team added a run to the scoreboard in the fifth and the seventh with Charles Zilnicki (Riverhead, N.Y./Riverhead, 2-for-5, 3 runs, two steals) scoring twice on sacrifice flies by Nover (2-for-3, 2 runs, RBI) and Delury (0-for-3, 3 RBI).

Maritime starter Chris Myers (5-3) went six innings for the Privateers and allowed eight runs (seven earned) and was credited with the loss.

The winner of this weekend's Skyline Conference Tournament will receive the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Championship.  Links to live stats of all this weekend's action can be found through the "LIVE STATS" button on the sjeagles.com web pages.
