Errors Plague Baseball In Sunday’s Doubleheader Losses

Patchogue, N.Y. – After being shutout 6-0 in game one, the St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (2-2) couldn't manage a comeback in game two as they were defeated 7-5 by the Brockport Golden Eagles (3-1).

Dan Diblasi (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) took the mound for the Golden Eagles in game one after a big day at the plate Saturday afternoon.  Diblasi gave up a lead-off double that led to a run scored but worked his way out of trouble with a strikeout to end the inning. Diblasi got on board with a single in the bottom half of the inning but was stranded on base. With a man on third and one away, the ball was lined to the second baseman, Thomas Santarcangelo (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) but it trickled off his glove and in to the outfield as the run came around to score. Two batters later, a two out single brought in another unearned run for the visiting Golden Eagles.

The Eagles got hits from Thomas Rubinstein (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and Joseph Calabrese (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) to begin the bottom of the second.  Joseph Lynn (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) came up to the plate with a chance to tie the game and hit a hard liner to the second baseman but he snagged it and quickly flipped it over to the shortstop for the double play.

Brockport led off the third inning with a triple and an error put the Golden Eagles up 4-0. Diblasi struck out the last two batters of the inning, and his last of the day, as he surrendered four runs, three of them unearned.

Jake Brown (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) came in to relieve Diblasi and allowed two runs in the fourth as Brockport extended their lead to 6-0. Brown settled down the next inning and retired the side in order. Matthew Hess (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) pitched two scoreless innings but the Eagles were unable to put any runs on the board.  Diblasi was tagged with the loss. Rubinstein continued his hot start to 2014 with two more hits in three at-bats.

Steven Szobesky (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) took the hill for the Eagles in game two and got a double play to end the first. Diblasi reached on a fielder's choice in the bottom half of the inning and advanced to third on a passed ball but Aloisio grounded out to end the inning.

SJC got two on in the second but failed to bring them home. Szobesky walked two with one out in the top of the third and a single up the middle gave Brockport their first lead of the game, but Szobesky got out of the jam with a strikeout. Bonilla took a hit by pitch to lead off for SJC and Joseph Liberatore (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) bunted for a hit as Bonilla advanced all the way to third. The run scored on a fielder's choice by Diblasi and a sacrifice fly by Aloisio gave the Eagles the lead.

A two-out single by Matt Leach (Rockville Center, N.Y./South Side) put the Eagles up 3-1 entering the fourth inning. The fourth was a disaster for the SJC defense as they committed two errors leading to a five-run inning. Josh Outsen (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Copiague) came in to relieve Szobesky and surrendered two runs before retiring the side. SJC loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth, and Diblasi capitalized again, this time with a sacrifice fly to drive home the run. The next batter Aloisio hit a pop fly to the centerfielder to bring home a fifth run for the Eagles. Brockport tacked on another run in the fifth and shut the Eagles down until the bottom of the seventh when SJC got two runners on with no outs. The tying run reached second with two outs as pinch-hitter Rubinstein came up to the plate, but he was caught looking at strike three to end the game.

Szobesky got the loss for the Golden Eagles in game two.  Outsen pitched three hitless innings and Kurt Robinson (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) finished it off for the Eagles with a perfect inning. Bonilla finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

The Eagles head to Fort Myers, Florida for a six-game trip before returning home on March 23 to host Yeshiva to open their Skyline Conference schedule.
