Rubinstein, Walsh Combine For 7 RBI's to Carry Eagles to Victory

Patchogue, N.Y. – The Golden Eagles (6-10) took advantage of eight walks and three batters being hit by pitch from the USMMA Mariners (9-6-1) pitchers as they scored 11 runs on just seven hits Thursday night in their 11-4 victory.

Merchant Marine was the first on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the opening inning but the Eagles grabbed a one-run lead with a two-RBI double by Thomas Rubinstein (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) in the second inning.

The Mariners got an unearned run back in the third to tie the game at two but a Ryan Walsh (Nesconset, N.Y./Chaminade) two-RBI single in the fourth put the Eagles back in front. Merchant Marine would not go down without a fight as they scored two runs in the fifth to bring the game back even.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles distanced themselves from the Mariners, and this time they did not look back, scoring five runs on three hits including a Rubinstein two-RBI single. SJC tacked a couple more runs on in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Rubinstein was 2-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Joe Liberatore (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) went 2-for-2 with four runs scored and an RBI and Walsh had three RBI's.

Matthew Hess (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) got the start, pitching 4 2/3 innings surrendering just one earned run. Matt Mills (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) picked up the victory, pitching a scoreless inning and two-thirds.

The Eagles take on Maritime on the road in a Skyline Conference doubleheader this Saturday, before returning home to face Purchase on Sunday.
