Golden Eagles Split Twin Bill with Panthers

Patchogue, N.Y. – The two eighth inning insurance runs proved to be the deciding factor in the Eagles 5-3 game one victory (8-12, 4-3 Skyline) against the Purchase Panthers (8-8, 5-3 Skyline). SJC's offense stalled in game two, falling 2-1.

In game one,  Steve Szobesky (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) took the hill for the Eagles and got in trouble in the first inning but worked his way out of the jam unscathed. SJC got two runners on with one out in the bottom half of the inning but could not bring them home. The Golden Eagles got on the board with an RBI single by Josh Outsen (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Copiague) and an RBI double by Anthony Bonilla (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Farmingdale) in the second inning. Brian Godoy (Coral Springs, FLA/Coral Springs) added to the lead with a single in the third to bring home Dan Diblasi (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst). Purchase got one run back in the fourth and one in the seventh as they trailed 3-2 heading into the eighth but the Eagles got the first two men on in the inning and they came around to score to distance themselves from the Panthers. Purchase got a run in the ninth but it wasn't enough as the Eagles cruised to victory.

Bonilla went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Godoy was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Szobesky surrendered just two runs over 6 1/3 innings and got the win. Frank Trionfo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) picked up the save for the Eagles in relief.

The Panthers struck first in the game two with a run in the second but the Eagles responded via an RBI single by Matt Leach (Rockville Center, N.Y./South Side) in the bottom half of the inning. Purchase regained the lead in the fifth inning and held off the Eagles rally in the seventh with a runner in scoring position and two outs.

Joseph Calabrese (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) went 1-for-3 with a run scored and Leach was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Diblasi had a great night on the mound for the Eagles but couldn't get the run support as he went 7 innings, giving up just two runs and striking out four.

The Eagles travel to Ramapo for a single game this Wednesday.
