Baseball Ousts Johns Hopkins for First-Ever NCAA Regional Victory

Written by Joshua Soto (SJC-LI Sports Information)

Washington, PA| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) baseball team earned its first NCAA Regional victory in program history after defeating Johns Hopkins, 3-0, on Thursday afternoon at Ross Memorial Field in Washington, Pa. The Golden Eagles (25-12) enter Friday's 10:00 AM game against the loser of TCNJ vs. La Roche with a 1-1 record and needing a victory to stay alive in the tournament.

Junior Ryan Aloise was dominant on the mound for the Golden Eagles, tossing three strikeouts in a complete game shutout—his first of the season.

SJC would find its offensive breakthrough in the bottom of the fifth, when Anthony Bonilla tripled to the right field fence to score both Daniel Campanelli and Ryan Walsh from third and second, respectively, to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Brendan Sullivan tacked on an addition run later in the inning with an RBI-single to center to increase the SJC lead to three (3-0).

Alosie commanded his fastball and off-speed pitches all the way into the ninth, when he was met with two-man-on, two-out situation, but the West Sayville, NY native remained calm and guided his side to its first-ever NCAA victory.

"It being an elimination game didn't really matter," said Aloise postgame. "It's the same type of game, you always want to win. That was my mindset and I knew the guys behind me were going to make plays and put up runs for me."

Anthony Bonilla went two-for-four scoring one run and driving two in. Sullivan was one-for-four with one RBI, while Campanelli and Joe Lynn both went two-for-three.

"Ryan has been our ace all year; he came out and gave us nine strong innings," said head coach Richard Garrett. "Our defense was tight, we got timely hitting and ran the bases well. It's nice to see we're back on track after yesterday's loss."
