Baseball Splits With Colby On Last Day of Gene Cusic Classic

Fort Myers, FL| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) baseball team splits non-conference doubleheader, 3-1, 7-6, on the last day of the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, FL. The Golden Eagles will leave Florida with a 6-4 start to the season, while the Mules drop to 3-4 

Game 1: SJC 1, Colby 3

Back-to-back hits, a double and a single, allowed the Mules' first two runs to score in the bottom of the second.

After a scoreless third inning, Vinny Biordi singled home Andrew Grieve to cut the Golden Eagles' deficit in half (2-1).

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Colby added an insurance run with an RBI single up the middle to secure the 3-1 win over SJC.

Despite receiving the loss, James Conway had a strong showing allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out five batters. John Baron earned the win in his 5.1 innings of work and allowed just one run in his outing.

Game 2:  Colby 6, SJC 7

The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start when Sean Balsam  singled home Gehrig Montoro, Andrew Libertelli followed with a two-run double to put the Golden Eagles ahead 3-0. The Mules responded back with a two-run second inning courtesy of a sacrifice fly and an RBI double.

Colby took its first lead of the game after a single up the middle pushed two more runs across the board for the 4-3 lead in the top of the third, and would add an additional run in the fourth.

Down 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth, Matthew Burnett tied the game 5-5 with a two-run single to plate Tyler Crafa and Biordi. Paul Britt and Tyler Sanderson both reached base safely to score the sixth and seventh runs of the game.

Colby came within one with an RBI triple late in the fifth inning but was held scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, as the Golden Eagles took the night cap 7-6.

The Golden Eagles will return home and start conference play on Saturday, March 25 when they take on the College of Mount St. Vincent at Gregg Alfano at 12:00 PM. Live stats will be available here.
