Baseball Suffers Non-Conference Loss to William Paterson

Wayne, NJ| The William Paterson University Pioneers turned 17 hits into 13 runs en route to a 13-3 non-conference victory over St. Joseph's College at Jeff Albies Field Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Eagles slip to 7-8 while the Pioneers improve to 11-5.

The Golden Eagles were first on the board courtesy of a bases-loaded wild pitch. A couple batters later, Ryan Lennon singled to right driving in Matthew Burnett for a 2-0 advantage.

The Pioneers evened the score at two plating single runs in the bottom of the fourth and the fifth behind RBIs from Anthony Hoagland and Greg Cuevas.

After a scoreless sixth, WPU broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the seventh before sending 10 Pioneers to the plate in the eighth tacking on six runs for a 13-2 lead.

Tyler Costa led off the top of the ninth with a walk and came into score on an RBI single up the middle from Tyler Sanderson, but WPU's Jake Kavanagh pitched around a one-out single to secure the win.

Louis Fontinha, Tyler Crafa, and Lennon all produced two hits for the Golden Eagles.

SJC starter Austin Turner went five innings allowing two runs on five hits before giving way to Michael Catanzaro who suffered the loss surrendering five runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of relief.

WPU's Doug Olcese earned the win allowing just two hits with five strikeouts in four innings of scoreless relief.

The Golden Eagles return to conference play when they host the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday, March 31. The doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
