Ft. Meyers, FL| The St. Joseph's College baseball team split with Skidmore College on day two of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Saturday afternoon. The Thoroughbreds came away with a 5-3 win in game one before the Golden Eagles answered with a 6-1 victory in game two.
SJC now sits at 3-2 on the season as Skidmore moves to 5-3.
Game One
St. Joseph's scored first in the top of the second, but the Thoroughbreds answered right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The Golden Eagles tied it up in the fourth when a Gehrig Montoro single knocked in Tyler Sanderson who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
Sanderson scored his third run of the day in the top of the sixth to put the Golden Eagles ahead 3-2, but the lead was short lived as Skidmore plated three in the bottom half of the inning to secure the 5-3 win.
Sanderson finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Jesse Nakashian and Montoro recorded a hit apiece.
SJC's Anthony Papa suffered the loss allowing five runs, three earned, with four strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Skidmore's Jay Gamboa picked up the win allowing three runs on four hits with seven K's in seven innings.
Game Two
Bats came alive for the Golden Eagles in game two as they outhit the Thoroughbreds 11-5.
After both teams pushed a run across in the first, SJC went ahead courtesy of a 2-RBI double from Nakashian.
Both sides were then held scoreless until the Golden Eagles tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the six to move the score to its final 6-1.
Nakashian led SJC at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Angelo Montalbano, Nick Vicino, and Sanderson all added two hits apiece.
Nick Mannarino earned his first win of the season allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts in six innings. Justin Fitzpatrick provided an inning of perfect relief.
Skidmore's Jacob Berish was tagged with the loss.
SJC continues to play in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Sunday, March 17 with a doubleheader with St. Lawrence.
