Baseball Claims Skyline Split with SJC-BK

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) baseball team came away with a Skyline Conference split with St. Joseph's College (Bklyn) at Gregg Alfano Field on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles cruised to an 11-0 win in game one before falling 4-3 in extra innings in game two.

SJCLI now sits at 14-14 on the season with a 6-8 conference record. SJCBK moved to 11-16 overall, 4-12 Skyline.

The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth where they strung together four hits, highlighted by a two-RBI double to the left center gap by Tyler Crafa, and produced five runs to widen the gap to 7-0.

The home team posted a pair of runs in the fifth and the sixth to claim the 11-0 win in seven innings.

Senior Tyler Costa led the Golden Eagles at the plate going 4-for-4 with an RBI and four runs scored. Junior Tyler Sanderson pitched in with two hits and three RBIs.

SJCLI starter Tim Woodford earned his fourth win scattering four hits while striking out six in a complete game effort.

SJCBK's Daniel Egan took the loss allowing seven runs on five hits in 3.2 innings of work.

After a two scoreless innings, the Bears were first on the board with a two-run top of the third.

An unearned run in the top of the fourth extended the visitor's lead to 3-0.

The Golden Eagles broke up the shutout with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Daniel Campanelli worked a walk to start the inning and Gehrig Montoro was hit by a pitch putting two runners on with no outs. Costa laid down a sacrifice bunt moving both runners into scoring position for Tyler Crafa who singled in Campanelli for the first run of the inning. Sanderson followed with a sac fly to score Montoro and cut the deficit to just one, 3-2.

Down to their final three outs, Campanelli worked his second leadoff walk, however, after a flyout to center recorded the first out of the inning, pinch runner James McAleavy was picked off first for out number two. Back-to-back walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Jesse Nakashian who also drew a walk pushing Costa across, tying the score at three and sending the game in extra innings.

SJCBK's J.J. McLaughlin was hit by a pitch to start the top of the eighth and moved up 90 feet after a Chris Zinser sacrifice bunt. An infield groundout put McLaughlin on third for Anthony Palermo who then knocked in the go-ahead run with a single through the left side.

Bears reliever Will DeLuca retired the Golden Eagles in order in the bottom half of the eighth to pick up his first save of the season.

McLaughlin was credited with the win out of the bullpen while SJCLI's Anthony Caminiti suffered the loss allowing one run on three hits in 2.1 innings of relief.

The Golden Eagles resume Skyline action when they travel to Mt. St. Mary on Monday, April 15. Game times are slated for 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
