Privateers Stay Afloat in Win Over Eagles

Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College men's basketball team (5-13, Skyline 3-8) continued with its struggles on Saturday in a 64-50 loss to the Privateers of SUNY Maritime (4-11, Skyline 3-7). The loss is the men's fourth in the past five games. The Eagles sit in a three-way tie for seventh place in the Skyline Conference.

Maritime got off to a hot start to open the game, going on an 11-0 run in the first three minutes of the game. A three-pointer by Jordan Kowalski (North Babylon, N.Y. / Abilene) gave St. Joseph's their first points of the game with 16:53 on the clock. The men struggled to shoot in the half, hitting just 20.7% from the floor and 3-of-12 from three-point land. The Privateers defense played tough forcing 12 St. Joseph's turnovers and held a lead by as much as 14 in the first half.

The opening of the second half was a back-and-forth exchange of baskets for the two teams. Then the Eagles made their run; sparked by a layup by Will Fortune (Seldon, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist) with 13:11 showing on the clock, the Eagles outscored the Privateers 15-7 over the next eight minutes cutting the lead to just two. However, down the stretch, St. Joseph's shooters went cold and Maritime hit critical free throws to seal the win; the Privateers hit an impressive 15-of-18 from the free-throw line in the second half alone.

Junior captain Cody Lohsen (Centereach, N.Y. / Centereach) led the Eagles with 12 points and nine boards. Guards Will Fortune and Phil Calixte (Amityville, N.Y. / Holy Trinity) each added 11 points. St. Joseph's collectively struggled shooting from the floor, hitting just 28.1% of their shots for the game and went just 4-for-23 behind the arc.

Next up for the Golden Eagles is a conference matchup at home on Tuesday January 29th at 8:00 p.m. against the Panthers of Purchase State (13-4, Skyline 7-4). This is the first game between the two teams. Last season, St. Joseph's won the two regular season meetings, but Purchase won in the postseason tournament, upsetting the #1 seeded Eagles in the Skyline semifinals.
