CCNY Beavers Build Dam in OT to Stymie Golden Eagles

New York, N.Y. — After an incredibly close game, the Golden Eagles (1-3) fell to the CCNY Beavers (2-1) in overtime on Friday night, 84-72.  Evan Mohammad (Bayside, N.Y./ Holy Cross), who was the team's high scorer on the night with 19 points, scored a three-point jumper with seven seconds left to force an overtime.

After the score tied at six early on in the first half, the Golden Eagles took the lead. SJC outplayed the Beavers in every aspect of play during the first half. Not only were their free throw and field goal percentages superior to their opponents, the Eagles also logged seven steals to the Beavers' one and only eight turnovers to CCNY's 15. The first half ended with SJC ahead 34-26.

The Beavers reversed this scale in the second half during which they outscored SJC 42-34. The visitors 16 fouls put them at a disadvantage as CCNY converted 15 out of their 22 free throw opportunities. Once the Beavers made a comeback, the two teams continued to tie at every turn. Mohammad's three-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation play forced the game into overtime.

The Golden Eagles couldn't seem to rally in the five minutes of overtime whereas the Beavers came out of the gate on fire. Only two minutes into overtime, CCNY had wracked up the score, 75-68. This energy was too much for the Eagles to overcome. Fouling proved to be SJC's ruin as CCNY sank nine free throws in overtime.

Sean McCarthy (Kings Park, N.Y./ Kings Park) contributed 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Andy Laurent (Amityville, N.Y./ Amityville) also knocked down 16 points in addition to his seven rebounds and three steals.

The Golden Eagles will host Yeshiva at 5 p.m. on Wednesday for their first Skyline Conference game of the season.
