St. Joseph's Lances MSMC Knights for Skyline Victory

Patchogue, N.Y. — The Golden Eagles (3-4, SKY 2-1) dominated at home on Saturday against the Mt. St. Mary Knights (1-4, SKY 1-1), winning their second Skyline Conference game of the season, 64-27. SJC's Andy Laurent (Amityville, N.Y./ Amityville) led the charge with 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Neither team was very successful shooting in the first half. The visiting Knights were 0-4 from the three-point line and only 28% from the field; they stayed afloat by shooting 75% from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles were 37% from the field, 30% from the three-point line and only 25% from the free-throw line. However, the home team was able to maintain possession for much of the first half and take more shots; by halftime SJC was up 24-17.

The Golden Eagles' defense effectively shut down the Knights' offense in the second half as MSMC scored only ten points in the last twenty minutes of the game. Working off of their strong defense, the Eagles got into an offensive groove. Shooting 67% from the field, 40% from the three-point line and 62.5% from the free throw line, the Golden Eagles knocked down 40 points in the second half and subsequently earned a lopsided victory against their Skyline Conference opponents.

Aiding Laurent in his 18-point game was Sean McCarthy (Kings Park, N.Y./ Kings Park) who scored 15 points, ripped down eight rebounds, dished off four assists and tallied two steals. Fernando Vasquez (Babylon, N.Y./ Babylon) finished with ten points and Billy Heenan (Amityville, N.Y./ Amityville) finished with nine and a game-high 13 boards.

St. Joseph's will host Vaughn College in a non-conference game on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Danzi Center.
