Men’s Basketball Earns Crucial 65-51 Conference Win vs. Old Westbury

Patchogue, NY| Senior Joseph Savaglio scored a career-high 10 points on 3-4 shooting as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team stormed past Skyline Conference rival SUNY Old Westbury, 65-51, at home on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Golden Eagles (8th in Skyline) improve to 8-12 on the year and 7-8 in conference play, setting up a must-win contest against seventh-placed Mount Saint Vincent (8-12, 7-8 Skyline) at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers, who maintain their first-place position, fall to 11-3 (12-7) with the loss.

SJC started off strong, scoring 12 of the match's first 17 points with junior Fernando Vazquez contributing nine tallies on 3-3 shooting from three. An 11-3 run by the Panthers saw them pull ahead by one (16-15) with 8:26 to play in the half, but it was the Golden Eagles that carried the lead (23-22) in halftime.

Sophomore Isaiah Moore opened the scoring in the second frame with a three-ball 1:04 into the period, and later his layup at 14:16 increased the hosts' lead to 10 points (34-24). A quick five points from the Panthers cut the deficit in half (34-29) at 12:17, but Old Westbury would come no closer to catching the Golden Eagles, who built leads as great as 19 points en route a the 65-51 victory.

Vazquez (6-12 FG, 4-6 3FG) and Old Westbury's Jamail Stanley (6-14 FG, 1-7 3FG) each tallied a game-best 17 points, with the former also contributing five rebounds and four assists. Senior Dominique Spann recorded his second double-double of the season with a 16 point/11 rebound effort on 6-7 shooting.

St. Joseph's was the far superior shooting team, boasting a field-goal percentage of 48% in contrast to Old Westbury's 30.2% performance. SJC also held edges in three-point shooting percentage (43.5%-24.0%) and points in the paint (22-18).
