Men’s Basketball Storms Past Yeshiva on Sunday

Patchogue, NY| Thanks to a strong defensive showing the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team cruised to a convincing 71-47 victory over Skyline Conference South Division rival Yeshiva University inside the Danzi Center on Sunday afternoon.

With the win the Golden Eagles move to7-14 on the year and 6-6 in conference play, good enough for fourth place in the South Division. The Maccabees slide to 12-7 (8-3 Skyline) and remain in third place.

Pacing SJC was junior Isaiah Moore (5-7 FG) and freshman Frank Basile (4-6 FG) who tallied 14 and 13 points apiece, respectively. Moore also grabbed a game-best nine rebounds.

Senior Andy Laurent contributed 10 points on 4-9 shooting and sophomore Brad Weiss went for six points and seven rebounds.

Yeshiva tallied the game's first basket and later went up 11-9 at 13:12. Freshman Joe Santoro 's layup at 11:41 would knot the score at 11 and begin a crippling 19-6 run for the hosts that put them ahead 30-17 at 5:23.

Maintaining momentum through the final few minutes SJC scored 10 of the half's last 15 points to ensure they went into the break up 18 points (40-22).

Moore opened the second period with a three-pointer that sprung a 15-8 run for St. Joseph's who went up 55-30 with 11:41 to play in regulation.

At 5:56 a pair of Fernando Vazquez free throws saw SJC go up 31 points, which was the largest lead of the afternoon. From there it was easy going for the Golden Eagles who eased to a 71-47 win.

St. Joseph's shot 46.3% from the field in comparison with Yeshiva's subpar 28.6% and also held edges in rebounding (40-34) and points off turnovers (18-6).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, February 9 when they hit the road to face SUNY Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference showdown at 6:00 PM. Live stats for the contest will be available here
