Yeshiva Outlasts Men’s Basketball on Sunday

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team took a hard-fought 62-45 defeat to Skyline Conference rival Yeshiva University inside the Danzi Center on Sunday afternoon.

The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 5-13 on the year and 4-9 in Skyline play as the Maccabees extend their winning streak to 11 games and improve to 12-5 (10-2 Skyline).

SJC's offense, which shot 30.0% from the field, was powered by junior Frank Basile, who scored a game-best 18 points in addition to grabbing seven rebounds.

Freshman Matthew Hirdt and junior Brad Weiss each contributed eight points while the latter was also credited with a team-high nine rebounds and a game-high five blocks.

The Maccabees were paced by Tal Gweta, who scored 16 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the field. Gabriel Leifer went for 12 points, 13 rebounds and six assists.

In a contest that produced seven lead changes, the Golden Eagles found themselves ahead 26-23 with 5:14 to play in the first half but squandered their advantage and entered the break trailing 33-28.

SJC brought the game to as close as three points (41-38) when Basile completed a three-point play with 11:22 remaining in regulation, but the guests finished the contest on a 21-7 run en route to a 62-45 victory.

Though outshot 44.2% to 30.0% from the field, SJC shot 35.7% from three and held a slim 0.9% advantage from beyond the arc.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, January 29 when they visit the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for a Skyline Conference match-up at 7:30 pm.
