Bray Leads Golf to Second Place Finish at Farmingdale Invitational

Bethpage, N.Y. - The men's golf team competed in the Farmingdale State College Skyline Invitational Tournament today at the Bethpage State Park Red Course and finished in second place out of six teams.

Despite the strong winds, the team played exceptionally well posting a season low score of 306, just three strokes off of the team and school record of 303 set last year at the Hamilton College Invitational in Utica, N.Y.

Junior Robert Bray led the team with and outstanding score of 74, which placed him in a five-way tie for first place medalist honors.  As a result of the tie, a playoff for first place honors was conducted.  Scott Sessions of Farmingdale State College won the playoff on the 4th hole of the sudden death competition.

Sophomore John Melandro continued his overall team leading play with a solid score of 76.  Seniors Sean Sanders (team captain) and Ken Ortiz each posted a very good score of 78.  Junior Zac Campanelli had a very good day, posting a solid 81.

Freshman Vincent Garofalo had another good outing - playing the Red Course for the very first time in competition - posting a good score of 83.  Garofalo is developing into a fine player as he did not have a very good ball striking day, yet was able to grind out a solid 83 in very difficult conditions.  "Those are signs of maturity and growth in his game," said Coach Cangero.

The team is still missing its number one player, Christian Bleck, due to injury.  They are working in a dedicated manner with purpose to improve their performance and are determined to do all that is necessary to compete for the Skyline Conference Championship.

The Golden Eagles next competition will be at the Mt. St. Mary Invitational at the Powelton Country Club in Newburgh, N.Y. on Friday, Oct 3.
