The Golden Eagles Take Third In Tri-Match

Sayville, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's golf team finished in third place, as they posted a two day total of 701 in a tri-match that played host to Farmingdale State and Nassau Community College.

The Golden Eagles line-up consisted of five of their newest members, "the players that participated in this tri-match are in the process of gaining experience, and discovering and learning what competitive golf at the Division III level is about," stated Head coach George Cangero.

Making their collegiate debut, last weekend was sophomore Evan Scheuch and freshman Dan McNamara.  Scheuch posted an 88 at the Bethpage State Park Red Course in Farmingdale, NY on Friday afternoon and shot for a 90 on Sunday at the Island Hills Country Club In Sayville, NY, as he finished in sixth place. McNamara shot a 92 on Friday and 100 which good enough for a 10th place finish.

Patrick Standard, a freshman, who competed in earlier events this year, posted an 85 in his first round and an 88 in his second round to lead the Golden Eagles with a third place finish.

Also tagging along were juniors Brandon Hauser and Rich Kelly, Hauser finished in fourth place after posting a score of 85 and 88 and Rich Kelly shot in the low 90's for a two-day total of 186. "Both of these young gentleman have had limited experiences and are still looking to improve their competitive games" added coach Cangero.

Cangero was pleased with the performance of the team stating that, "Each of these young men did their best to post their best number possible, and did just that considering their limited experience." I am very proud of how they performed and even more proud of how they conducted themselves.   Every golfer must go through this "maiden voyage" to fully understand what it is like to be out there on his own and have only one swing at perfection, added Cangero.

"These young men have a very bright future ahead of them and they will certainly be an improvement to our golf program for years to come," concluded Cangero.

The Golden Eagles will return to conference action on October 2 as they will host the Golden Eagle Invitational as part of the final Skyline qualifier. Tee-off is scheduled for 11:00 AM.
