Marywood Holds Off Men’s Lacrosse, 8-7

Patchogue, NY| Despite three goals from sophomore Zak Jones, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse was edged, 8-7, by non-conference rival Marywood University at Danzi Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The loss sends the Golden Eagles to 2-1 on the year as the Pacers improve to 3-2.

Jones powered an SJC offense that generated 37 shots--nine more than Marywood recorded. Senior Matt Prokesch contributed two goals on seven shots, and senior Jack Murray went for a goal and an assist.

Sophomore Declan Canevari won 13 of 19 faceoffs and scooped up a team-high four ground balls.

Marywood struck first, 1:42 into the contest, but Jones knotted up the score less than two minutes later, at 11:26.

A tally with 16 seconds remaining in the first quarter and two additional marks in the opening eight minutes of the second saw Marywood go up 4-1 with just over seven minutes to play until halftime.

Prokesch and Murray scored at 6:21 and 3:09, but Austin Maylor's tally with 38 seconds left in the opening half ensured the guests took a two-goal lead (5-3) into the break.

A goal apiece in the third (6-4) set up a fourth quarter that saw Prokesch cut the Marywood lead to one goal with 12:06 to play in regulation. Zach Vaughn's goal at 8:04 reestablished the Pacers' two-goal lead, but back-to-back tallies by Jones and freshman Michael Benasutti knotted the game up at seven, leaving the hosts 4:20 to find a winner.

On the ensuing faceoff, Canevari was edged by Marywood's Riley Litman, and less than two minutes later, with penalty waiting to be called, the guests found the back of the net when Maylor tallied the game's winning goal.

In his third-straight start between the pipes, sophomore Adam Sivon (2-1) made nine saves on 17 shots. Marywood's Vinny Biancardi (3-2) recorded 16 saves.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, March 9 when they visit Western Connecticut State for a non-conference contest at 1:00 pm.
