Men’s Lacrosse Holds off Mt. St. Mary for Skyline Win

Patchogue, NY| Junior Chris Nielsen scored the game-winner to lift the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's lacrosse team to a crucial 8-7 Skyline Conference victory over Mount St. Mary College at Danzi Stadium on Thursday evening.

With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 5-8 overall on the year and 2-3 in Skyline play as the Knights slip to 5-9 (2-2 Skyline).

SJC was paced by freshman Anthony Passarella, who scored two goals and added three helpers for a game-best five points.

Nielsen and Max Chin contributed two goals apiece and sophomore Vincent Raccuglia caused a game-high six turnovers.

SJC won 12 of 19 faceoffs, nine of which were won by junior Declan Canevari.

A back-and-forth affair yielded a 3-2 scoreline at halftime in favor of the hosts but a strong third quarter for the Knights ensured they started the fourth ahead 5-4.

Freshman Tim McCann tied the score up at seven with 4:08 to play with a man-down tally and enabled Nielsen to score the winner 2:03 later.

St. Joseph's outshot the Knights 38-30 in the contest and scooped up 46 ground balls to Mt. St. Mary's 33.

Freshman keeper Andrew Brust (3-6) made eight saves on 15 shots.

The Golden Eagles wrap their 2019 regular season on Tuesday, April 23 when they host SUNY Purchase for a Skyline Conference contest at 7:30 pm.
