Eagles Offense Explodes Late, Defeats NYU-Poly, 4-2

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College men's soccer team (5-7, Skyline 3-1) defeated the Fighting Blues of NYU-Polytechnic (4-7, Skyline 2-2), 4-2, to move into a tie for second place with Farmingdale State (5-6-1, Skyline 3-1).

Juinor forward Fabio Alves (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) led the Eagles with five points, two goals and an assist. Senior striker John Dettori (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) and junior midfielder Anthony Rappa (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) each added two assists. Both, senior midfielder Craig Ceruti (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham- Wading River) and freshman midfielder Justin Heredia (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) scored goals in the win.

NYU-Poly got on the board first with a goal by Masato Arizai in the 23rd minute. St. Joseph's controlled the ball for much of the first half but was unable to find the back of the net. The Fighting Blue Jays held a 1-0 lead going into the half.

St. Joseph's found their groove in the second half and tied the score 65 minutes into the game off a Dettori cross to Ceruti. Seven minutes later Justin Heredia scored the go-ahead goal from a cross by Dettori that deflected off Alves. The Golden Eagles never looked back and Alves scored two goals in the span of a minute to put the game out of reach with a 4-1 score.  NYU-Poly responded quickly with a goal but was unable to overcome the St. Joseph's defense.

The next game for the Eagles is this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at Purchase (5-3-1, Skyline 2-2). Last season the Eagles defeated the Panthers 5-1.
