Eagles Drop First Round Game of Gary Smith Tournament

Patchogue, N. Y. – In the opening round of the first annual Gary Smith Invitational Tournament the host St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (0-4) fell to the FDU Florham Devils (2-1), 5-1.  The Eagles are now set to play the Coast Guard Academy in the tournament's consolation game at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.  Coast Guard (1-0-1) tied with New Paltz (0-1-1), 1-1, in the other first round game but unofficially lost a tiebreaker via penalty kicks to determine which team would advance to the championship game at 3 p.m.

The Devils cruised to the victory as they scored their opening goal in the fourth minute of the game on a tally by Dylan Meyer and following up in the 32nd minute on another unassisted goal by Ryan Hurdes.  SJC's Fabio Alves brought the home team back within one at 37:04 but it was their last spout of offense in the game.

FDU would score three more times in the second half on goals by Chaz Armand, Hurdes (his second of the day assisted by Armand) and Justin Barbosa.
