Eagles Sunk by Maritime, 2-1, in Second Skyline Loss

Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's men's soccer team put itself into an early 2-0 hole and came up short in a second half comeback attempt and fell to Maritime, 2-1 for their second Skyline Conference loss of the season.  The Privateers improve to a 4-4-2 (1-0-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Golden Eagles fall to 0-9-1 (0-2 Skyline).

St. Joseph's outshot Maritime 23-12 on the night, but strong play by Privateer keeper Karl Weber kept the game close throughout, finishing the game with six saves.

Maritime broke through in the 12th minute, when a throw-in by junior Tim Swinehart found its way off the head of Andrew Barry, bounced towards the goal and Kieran Donnelly dove to bury the ball in the net with a header.

The Privateers doubled their lead in the 21st minute when Nick Mast tallied his first goal of the season as he headed the ball into the top right corner of the net off of a corner kick by Renato Chira-Farfan.  The Golden Eagles held the shot advantage 12-7 in the opening half, but after the first 45 minutes, it was Maritime that led, 2-0.

In the second half, it was St. Joseph's that struck in the 64th minute when sophomore Gaetano Innamorato (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) charged downfield on the far side and sent the ball across the ground into the middle of the box, where one Eagle player missed it, but it landed on the foot of junior Fabio Alves (Holbrook, N.Y/Sachem East), who fired it low into the bottom left corner to make the score 2-1.

The Golden Eagles kept pressing, but despite six shots to Maritime's one the rest of the contest, Weber made two saves and the equalizing goal was kept out.

St. Joseph's returns to the field Wednesday at Drew University before returning home for a Skyline game with Purchase next Saturday at 11 a.m.
