Upset Special as Men's Soccer Knocks Mt. St. Mary from First Place Perch

Patchogue, N.Y. — The Golden Eagles (2-10-2, 2-2-1 SKY) sleighed the Mt. St. Mary Knights (8-3-1, 4-1-1 SKY), who had been hitherto undefeated in Skyline Conference matches, in an brilliant upset on Saturday. The win catapulted the Eagles back into the Skyline Tournament mix and knocked the Knights out of first place.  In observation of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, both teams supported the cause by wearing either pink shirts, shoelaces or warm-up shirts.

With Mt. St. Mary's first goal just over a minute into the match, St. Joseph's prognosis looked grim. The Eagles did not hang their heads in defeat though but rather answered with their own tally minutes later, as Fabio Alves' (Holbrook, N.Y./ Sachem East) cross found Chris Hall (Mastic, N.Y./ William Floyd) in the box, who then expertly sent the ball over the keeper's hands and into the back of the net.

With the score even, St. Joseph's thrived on their home field, maintaining possession and chasing away any advances on their defensive end. Andrew Stasiewicz (Mount Sinai, N.Y/ Mount Sinai) came up with a big play at 26:56 with an unassisted shot and score, giving the Golden Eagles an advantage going into the second half.

A Knights goal at 51:04 threatened overtime but the Eagles, all too familiar with tie-games, were not about to let that happen. Less than three minutes before the final buzzer, the Golden Eagles' last push was successful as Enrique Tirado (Smithtown, N.Y./ St. Anthony's) trumped Mt. St. Mary's keeper and found the back of the net off of an assist from Alves.

The Eagles will travel to New Jersey City on Columbus Day in the hopes of building upon this empowering win.
