Merchant Marines Down Golden Eagles, 1-0

Patchogue, N.Y. — After keeping the game at a scoreless tie until just after the half, the St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (3-5) men's soccer team were defeated 1-0 on their home turf by the USMMA-Kings Point Mariners (3-4).

The Golden Eagles showed promise at the beginning moments of the game, but were eventually outshot 7-2 by the Mariners in the first half and 19-2 in the second.

The Mariners took the lead just under four minutes into the second half as Alex Maney played a quick ball in to Dan Weldon, who in turn executed and put up the first and only goal of the game at the 48:52 mark.

St. Joseph's wouldn't go down without a fight, however.  Although scoring opportunities were few and far between, they played with determination up until the very last whistle. Eagles' goalkeeper Avery Gomez posted 12 saves to keep St. Joseph's in the game until the end.

The Golden Eagles next match is a road Skyline Conference game against Purchase this Saturday.
