Old Westbury Slips by Men's Soccer, 2-1

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The Golden Eagles' men's soccer team (4-11, 2-3 Skyline) was involved in a tight match on Thursday with SUNY Old Westbury (7-5, 2-2 Skyline) narrowly going down in defeat, 2-1.

The St. Joseph's College players were in a tough battle the whole way as in the first minute of the game, Old Westbury started off with a bang, scoring at the 1:15 mark.  Scoring the first goal of the match, the Panthers played tough defense until they let up a St. Joseph's goal in the 44th minute.

SJC's goal came on a great play by both Enrique Tirado (Smithtown, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) and Cody Kull (Manorville, N.Y. / Eastport-South Manor).  Tirado crossed the ball into the box on a nicely placed ball across the middle.  Kull was in the perfect position and headed the ball into the back of the net.  It was a timely connection for the game tying goal before the two teams entered halftime.

Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles could not carry the momentum into the second half as they did not score again.  Old Westbury's Cody Greene dribbled the ball into the Golden Eagle's territory in the 60th minute and provided a great scoring opportunity as two Panther players entered the offensive zone.  With a perfectly placed pass and a perfectly placed shot by Panther Angel Velez, SJC's keeper Avery Gomez (Bay Shore, N.Y. / Bay Shore) did not have a chance at making the save.  Gomez had nine saves in the game.

St. Joseph's looks to rebound in another Skyline matchup on the road against Mount Saint Mary on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
