Rutgers-Newark Tops St. Joseph's in Double Overtime

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team dropped a 2-1, double overtime decision to Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup at Danzi Stadium. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 1-6-1 (0-0-1) on the season, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 8-2-0 (1-0-0).

A choppy first half yielded 12 shots tilted in favor of St. Joseph's (7-5), but it was Rutgers-Newark that tallied the half's only goal. Sebastian Gostynski did well to evade the Golden Eagles' defense before playing a ball back into the middle from deep inside the box. On the receiving end was a wide-open Tyler Nowak, who struck the ball home for his second goal of the season.

The Scarlet Knights were credited with the first three shots of the second half, but it was the Golden Eagles that would find the breakthrough. A scuffle in the box resulted in the ball finding the feet of sophomore Justin Busto at the top of the 18 yard box, who finished left side for his second tally of the year.

Without a regulation winner, the game went to overtime—the third time for St. Joseph's this season. The deciding tally would come in the second overtime session, when Gotynski crossed from the left side to find a streaking Nowak, who poked home his second goal of the evening.

Rutgers-Newark carried most of the play throughout the game and outshot the Golden Eagles 12-8 in total. St. Joseph's keeper Avery Gomez was credited with four saves on the evening.

Defender Javier Reyes led the Golden Eagles with two shots. Senior Gaetano Innamorato again starred in midfield for the hosts, while Busto also had a strong showing up top.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Saturday, September 26 when they welcome the College of Mount Saint Vincent to Danzi Stadium for a Skyline Conference showdown. Kickoff is set for 12:00 PM. Follow the game live at sjcgoldeneagles.com.
