Farmingdale Holds Off SJC in Tuesday Night Skyline Action

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team was handed its first Skyline Conference defeat of the season on Tuesday night, at the hands of Farmingdale State College at Danzi Stadium. With the 3-2 defeat, the Golden Eagles fall to 2-7-1 (1-1-1) on the season, while the Rams improve to 6-3-0 (3-0-0).

Farmingdale grabbed the match's early momentum, having scored the first tally in the 11th minute. A deep ball was played up top to Rams forward Richard Mastrangelo, who failed to bring it down but found himself in front of a wide open goal after the ball ricocheted off of SJC keeper Avery Gomez. The Rams would double their lead in the 23rd minute, when J.T. Famularo found the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season.

The Rams held advantages in nearly all statistical categories in the first half, most notably in shots (7-5) and corners (3-2).

The Golden Eagles appeared rejuvenated in the second frame, having recorded the first four shots on goal before finally breaking through in the 65th minute. Junior Justin Heredia, streaking down the left flank, played a ball into Alex Guadagno in the box, and the senior cooly slid home his fourth goal of the year and his second in as many games.

St. Joseph's continued to push, recording the next two shots, but the Rams answered with two of their own before recapturing their two-goal lead again in the 80th minute, when Mastrangelo took a pass from Michael Vultaggio and converted his second of the match from the top of the box.

In the 87th minute the Golden Eagles would claim a consolation prize in the form of senior Andrew Stasiewicz's first goal of the season. After Farmingdale keeper Kevin Gordillo fumbled the ball in the box, Stasiewicz pounced on the loose ball and finished high right side.

Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles outshot the Rams 16-14 and even were awarded more corners (8-6) Gomez was forced into making just three saves on the evening, while Gordillo made four.

St. Joseph's returns to action on Saturday, October 3 when they welcome Purchase College to Danzi Stadium for a rematch of last season's Skyline Conference final. The match is a part of the St. Joseph's College Centennial Kickoff Weekend and will be played at 2:00 PM following the women's soccer teams match vs. Maritime. Live stat will be available here.
