Men’s Soccer Suffers 1-0 Double-OT Loss to Purchase

Patchogue, NY| A double-overtime goal off the foot of Issac Lee sunk the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team in a 1-0 defeat to Skyline Conference rival Purchase State at Danzi Stadium on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 2-8-1 (1-2-1), while the Panthers improve to 5-3-1 (1-0-2).

In a match that saw St. Joseph's severely outshoot its opponent 17-4, the Golden Eagles failed to find the back of the net, which resulted in them dropping a crucial conference match.

It took until the 35th minute for Purchase to register its first shot of the match, as St. Joseph's controlled play for essentially the entire contest. After leading 6-1 in shots after the first frame, the Golden Eagles pushed even harder in the second half, outshooting the Panthers 7-1.

In the 70th minute, midfielder DeVaunte Maynes mistimed a header from a cross outside the box just wide of the goal. Moments earlier, Justin Heredia's header attempt struck the crossbar and deflected over the net.

St. Joseph's outshot Purchase again in the first overtime, this time by a 3-1 ratio. Despite their pressure, the Golden Eagles simply could not find a goal, and in the 102nd minute allowed Lee to pounce on a loose ball in the box and bury the game-winner and his first tally of the season.

Purchase's keeper Esteban Aguilar was forced into making seven saves, while SJC's Avery Gomez made just two.

In his first start of the season, Maynes had a strong showing in midfield, showing off his ability to hold the ball and make plays. Defender Brian O'Sullivan was active and almost curled in a audacious free kick from way outside the box in the 64th minute.

The Golden Eagles are back at it on Wednesday, October 7 when they visit St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn. Kickoff is set for 6:00 PM. Follow the match with live stats here.
