Men’s Soccer Blanked by William Paterson in 2016 Opener

Wayne, NJ| In his first game at the helm of the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team, Alex Mendolia and his side suffered a hard-fought 1-0 loss to William Paterson on the road on Thursday evening.

After playing through a scoreless 77 minutes, the Pioneers broke through when Jake Dufner slotted home a rebound attempt following a save by SJC keeper Avery Gomez.

Paterson came out of the gate flying, registering six of the game's first seven shots though the opening 27 minutes, but an organized backline ensured the Golden Eagles reached the break unscathed.

Early in the 77th minute, SJC won a corner to be taken by senior Robert Gomez, and the set piece yielded a header attempt by senior Brian O'Sullivan stopped by Paterson keeper Kyle Quigley, but, quickly headed the other way, the Pioneers converted 17 seconds later.

Senior midfielder Justin Heredia registered the Golden Eagles' final chance at goal in the 85th minute, but saw his attempt stray over goal.

The Pioneers' attack generated 15 shots compared to SJC's four and forced Gomez into making a healthy seven saves. The Golden Eagles, who were whistled for 14 fouls, did do well to win four corners on the evening.

SJC returns to action on Tuesday, September 6 when they travel to Union, NJ to face NJAC heavyweight Kean University at 7:30 PM. Live video and stats will be available here.
