Men’s Soccer Downed in Regular Season Finale

Farmingdale, NY| Despite establishing an early goal, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team suffered a 5-2 defeat on the road to Farmingdale State in the final game of the regular season on Wednesday evening.

With the loss the Golden Eagles finish the season with a 7-10 record and enter the Skyline Conference Championship as the #5 seed with a 6-5 conference mark. SJC will face Farmingdale—who earned the #4 seed with an 8-3 conference record—again on the road on Saturday in the first round of the playoffs.

Freshman Rayneri Ruiz opened the scoring in the 10th minute when he struck from 25 yards out to score his fourth goal of the season and put the guests up 1-0 early. The Rams would respond 20 seconds later when Carlos Rivera banged home a rebound to knot the score up at one.

In the 31st minute Farmingdale would go up 2-1 via a tally off the foot of Steve Mastrangelo, and a Flynn Shanahan mark in the 45th minute ensured the hosts entered the break up 3-1.

The Golden Eagles would bring the game back to within one just six minutes into the second half when Brian O'Sullivan played a long searching ball to fellow senior Justin Heredia, who finished for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The SJC comeback would be short lived, though, as the Rams collected a pair of insurance markers in the 66th and 71st minutes scored by Christian Campos and Jovanni Parkinson, respectively.

SJC generated 10 shots on goal in the match, three fewer than Farmingdale. Keeper Avery Gomez made eight saves on the evening.

The time for Saturday's (Oct. 29) first round matchup will be announced on Thursday. Live stats for the game will be available here.
