Ruiz’s Double Powers Men’s Soccer to First Win of 2018

Patchogue, NY| Junior Rayneri Ruiz scored twice as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team defeated York College, 3-2, in the final game of the 2018 SJC Invitational Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

The result sees both the Golden Eagles and the Cardinals move to 1-3 in their respective seasons.

SJC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Ricardo Zapata pounced on a loose ball in the box in the wake of a post-corner scuffle.

The Cardinals knotted the score up at one seven minutes later, but Ruiz's pair of goals in the 27th and 43rd minutes ensured the hosts entered the break up 3-1.

Rohan Burrell's second tally of the match in the 63rd minute brought York back to within one but no equalizer would come as the Golden Eagles held on for a 3-2 victory.

Sophomore keeper Tyler Flaherty (1-3) made just one save in his first win at St. Joseph's. York's Johan Bermeo (1-2) made four saves.

SJC dominated play throughout, outshooting the Cardinals 30-10 overall. St. Joseph's also generated eight corners to York's zero.

In the first game of the afternoon, Manhattanville College defeated St. Joseph's (Brkln) 6-2 to clinch the tournament title.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, September 13 when they visit Marywood College for a non-conference contest at 4:00 pm.
