Men’s Soccer Knocks Off Marywood, 3-1

Scranton, PA| Junior Rayneri Ruiz scored twice for the second-straight game as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team defeated Marywood University, 3-1, in a non-conference road contest on Thursday afternoon.

The win sends the Golden Eagles to 2-3 on the year as the Pacers slip to 0-3.

Ruiz opened the scoring in the ninth minute when he took a Damian Duda cross one-time in the box and beat Marywood keeper Mike Gallagher.

Duda doubled SJC's lead (2-0) 11 minutes later when he pounced on a loose ball in the box and tallied his first goal of the season. From there the guests would ride their 2-0 lead into the break.

Marywood's Zac Lloyd cut the hosts' deficit in half (2-1) in the 78th minute with a headed goal inside the box, but Ruiz's insurance marker three minutes later secured St. Joseph's 3-1 victory.

Sophomore keeper Tyler Flaherty (2-3) made six saves on seven shots for SJC. Gallagher recorded three saves on six shots for the Pacers.

Despite outshooting Marywood 8-6 in the first half, SJC was outshot 11-6 in the second and 17-14 overall in the match.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, September 16 when they host Yeshiva University for their first Skyline Conference contest of the season at 12:00 pm.
