Men’s Soccer Blanks Purchase, 2-0

Purchase, NY| Junior Rayneri Ruiz scored the game-winner in the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team's 2-0 victory over Skyline Conference rival SUNY Purchase at Danzi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 7-6-1 on the year and 5-2-1 in conference play. The Panthers slip to 4-5-2 (2-3-1 Skyline) with the loss.

Outshot 7-6 in the first half, SJC held the hosts to a 0-0 tie at the break but broke through in the 65th minute, when Ruiz took a pass from junior Damian Duda and beat the Purchase keeper low far post for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

St. Joseph's, which outshot the Panthers 16-10 in the second half, maintained offensive pressure throughout the second frame and doubled its advantage in the 80th minute when Purchase tallied an own goal (2-0).

Sophomore Tyler Flaherty (7-6-1) faced 17 shots and made seven saves in the contest. Purchase's Jordan Meade was credited with 13 saves.

In total, SJC outshot Purchase 22-17 but won fewer corners (4-3).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, October 17 when they host Stockton for a non-conference tilt t 7:00 pm.
