Men’s Soccer Falls to USMMA in Skyline Championship First Round

Kings Point, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team saw its 2018 season come to an end on Sunday afternoon following a 4-0 road defeat to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in the first round of the Skyline Conference Championship.

The sixth-seeded Golden Eagles wrap the year with an 8-9-1 overall record. The third-seeded Mariners improve to 11-4-2 and advance to play second-seeded SUNY Maritime in the semifinals.

Scoreless until the final minutes of the first half, USMMA broke the scoring ice in the 42nd minute when Liam Cashmore finished into an open net from inside the box.

After taking 1-0 lead into the break, the Mariners doubled their lead (2-0) in the 52nd minute via Sam Ney. Ney would make it a three-goal advantage (3-0) for the hosts in 60th minute when he beat SJC keeper Tyler Flaherty from the right side.

Zach Lysakowski wrapped the afternoon's scoring (4-0) when he broke free of the SJC defense and scored on a breakaway in the 72nd minute.

Flaherty (8-9-1) was credited with four saves in a match that saw his side outshot 16-8 overall. USMMA's Matthew Milner (11-4-2) also made four saves in a clean-sheet effort.

The Mariners won seven corner kicks to SJC's four on the afternoon.
