Tennis Hits the Ground Running, Beats Rutgers-Newark, 5-4

Patchogue, N. Y. – The St. Joseph's men's tennis team braved the chilly conditions to open their spring season at the SJC Outdoor Field Complex on Thursday and overcame the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders, 5-4.   SJC's record now stands at 1-1, as they played one match during the fall.

Leading the charge for the Golden Eagles were the two doubles teams of Matt Reed and Stephen Fox, and Denzil Charles with Brian Merle, to start the day out with two points for the home team.  Both matchups were extremely tight as the Reed/Fox pairing prevailed 9-8 (7-5) and Charles/Merle topped Rutgers 9-7.

Securing Golden Eagle singles victories on the courts were Fox at third singles (6-4, 6-1), Charles at fifth singles (5-7, 7-5, 10-2), and Merle at sixth singles (3-6, 6-4, 10-6). Fox cruised in his match, while Charles and Merle mounted valiant comebacks after being down a set.

SJC now looks ahead to a Wednesday afternoon home match with the College of Staten Island scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
