Track & Field has Landmark Performance at NJAC Championships

Mahwah, N.J. - St. Joseph's outdoor track and field team broke many individual records at the two-day NJAC Championships, as the men's team placed ninth and the women's squad finished in seventh this past Saturday and Sunday.

Sophomore Ashley Arquer (Lindenhurst, N.Y., Copiague) headed day one achievements as she qualified for finals in the 100-meter (12.72) and the long jump where she had her second best collegiate jump of career (4.93m) and placed ninth.

AnnMarie Zigrosser (Bayport, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) flew past the opposition in Saturday's 10,000 meter, finishing in second with a time of 39:15.24, beating SJC's all-time record by a one minute and 29 seconds. Zigrosser's finish awarded her second team All-NJAC Conference.

Chris Maher (Shirley, N.Y./ Longwood) rounded out day one's successes by beating St. Joseph's all-time mark in the hammer toss by three meters with a throw of 34.11 meters.

On Sunday, the Golden Eagles saw more success demolishing old records.  Arquer broke Saturday's record by finishing the 100-meter in seventh, while passing SJC's best 200-meter time (26.40). 

Sophomore Jessica Pierno (East Patchogue, N.Y./ Bellport) competed in the heptathlon, where she came in sixth, beating five-of-seven individual best times for St. Joseph's.

Samantha Maurice (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East), Cassandra Costarelli (Rocky, N.Y./Rocky Point), Kristina Schrepf (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) and Amanda Sprague (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Conntequot) posted a 2:23.19 in the 4x400m which set a new school record.

The men poured on school feats in the 4x100m relays with Brian Frejka (Medford, N.Y./ Patchogue-Medford), Mike O'Shea (Ronkonoma, N.Y./ Connetquot), Erik Haughn (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./ Comsewogue), and Chris Corrao (Patchogue, N.Y./ Patchogue-Medford) breaking school records with a fifth place finish.  The 4x400m relay of Frejka, O'Shea, Mario Mayen (Center Moriches, N.Y./ Center Moriches), and Kevin Sanders (Wading River, N.Y./ Shoreham-Wading River) placed fifth and qualified for ECACs.

Mayen won the NJAC crown in the 400 meter with a new school record time of 48.45 and increased his ECAC rank to 6th and ranks 31st nationally. 

The Golden Eagles elite will ready for the two-day ECAC Championships in Springfield, Mass. on May 14-15 to wrap up the 2015 outdoor season.
