Men’s Volleyball Knocks Off John Jay on Wednesday

Patchogue, NY| Freshman Matthew Amberge recorded a game- and season-high 13 kills as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over non-conference rival John Jay College inside the Danzi Center on Wednesday evening.

With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 4-2 in the their inaugural season as the Bloodhounds slide to 3-2.

Amberge hit 50% on the evening and collected six digs and three aces. Freshman Kyle Biggers went for 11 kills, four blocks and two aces, and fellow classman Paul Curaro was credited with a game-best nine digs.

SJC opened the match with a furious 8-0 run, capped off by an Amberge kill, and proceeded to maintain its torrid pace en route to a 25-8 set one victory.

The second was tighter and saw John Jay pull ahead 9-7 early, but a 13-6 run, that featured a pair of Amberge service aces, put the Golden Eagles up 20-15 before taking the frame by a 25-18 scoreline.

Up 16-15 in the third, SJC allowed John Jay a 7-2 run and fell behind 21-18. An Amberge kill and a pair of Bloodhound attack errors knotted the score at 21, but John Jay used a 4-0 run to claim a 25-21 victory.

Against the run of play SJC jumped out to a 11-8 lead in the fourth before using a 12-3 run to build a 12-point lead (23-11). Moments later a Curaro kill would clinch the 25-15 set and 3-1 match win.

In a match that saw SJC collect 37 kills--the team's second highest total this season--the hosts held advantages in nearly every statistical category including digs (39-28), aces (14-4) and assists (33-22).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, February 10 when they host Arcadia University in a non-conference match at 7:00 PM. Live video and stats will be available here.
