Men’s Volleyball Earns Wins Over Rutgers-Newark, Alvernia on Friday Night

Reading, PA| A balanced attack led the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball team to a pair of non-conference victories over Rutgers-Newark (3-2) and Alvernia University (3-0) in Reading, Pa. on Friday evening.

The wins send the Golden Eagles to 10-7 on the year as Rutgers-Newark falls to 6-12 and Alvernia to 8-7.

SJC 3, Rutgers-Newark 2

After winning the first set 25-20, SJC fell behind 2-1 when the Scarlet Knights took the second and third frames by scores of 25-23 and 25-19.

Up 24-19 in the fourth, the Golden Eagles looked poised to force a fifth set but a 3-0 run by Rutgers brought the game back within two points (24-22). Forced into a must-win situation, SJC's Paul Curaro registered a kill for the next point to seal the 25-22 win for the Golden Eagles.

Rutgers jumped out an early 2-1 lead in the deciding set but SJC answered with a 8-3 run to go up 9-5 before surging to a 15-8 set and 3-2 match victory.

Curaro (19 kills), Will Flohr (18 kills), Kyle Biggers (12 kills) and Matthew Amberge (10 kills) led an SJC attack that generated 66 total kills, while Tyler Jones dished out a season-high 58 assists.

SJC 3, Alvernia 0

Edging Alvernia 25-23 in the first set, the Golden Eagles saw the hosts go up 11-10 midway through the second but used an 8-0 run to go up 18-11 before earning the 25-19 victory.

Similarly in the third, SJC fell behind 15-14 and again used a quick run--this time of the 4-0 variety--to go up 18-15. Alvernia grabbed the next point but the Golden Eagles took seven of the final nine to earn the 3-0 sweep with a 25-18 third-set victory.

Biggers hit at a 83.3% kill percentage and collected 10 kills in the match. Flohr contributed 11 kills and five digs, and Michael Barfield went for a team-best 10 digs.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, March 9 when they host Baruch College for a 7:00pm non-conference match inside the Danzi Center. Live stats for the match will be available here.
