Men’s Volleyball Opens Season with Comeback Win Over #14 Mount St. Joseph’s

Union, NJ| The St. Joseph's College men's volleyball team began its 2018 campaign with a come-from-behind victory over #14 Mount St. Joseph's University, 3-2, at Kean University on Friday evening.

The Lions claimed closely-played wins in sets one and two, 26-24 and 25-22, but the Golden Eagles stayed alive with a 25-18 win in the third set.

Mount St. Joseph's held a slight edge early in set four, 7-5, before SJC rattled off eight of the next nine points for a 13-8 advantage. Shortly after, four unanswered points from the Lions would turn it into a two-point game, 17-15, but the Golden Eagles held on for the 25-21 win, pushing the match to a decisive fifth set.

The two sides exchanged points early in the fifth frame with neither side managing more than a two-point lead.  A pair of MSJU miscues and a service ace from sophomore Will Flohr provided some breathing room for SJC (14-10) before a kill from sophomore Kyle Biggers secured the 15-11 win.

Sophomore Paul Curaro led all players putting away 18 kills with sophomore Matthew Amberge and Flohr finishing in double figures with 15 and 11 kills, respectively.  Senior setter Tyler Jones tossed a match-high 50 assists and junior libero Danny McNamara recorded a match-high 24 digs.

Mount St. Joseph's was lead by Adam Williams (16 kills) and Nathan Herdeman (43 assists).

The Golden Eagles return to action when they take on #11 Kean University and Arcadia University on Saturday, January 20th. Game times are set for 9:30 am and 11:30 am, respectively.
