Glenside, PA| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball team improved to 6-3 on Saturday afternoon with a pair of victories over non-conference opponents Messiah (3-0) and SUNY Poly (3-0) at Arcadia University's Knight Classic on Saturday afternoon.
SJC 3, Messiah 0
With relative ease, St. Joseph's earned a 25-19 victory in set one but was met by a much more stubborn opponent in sets two and three.
In the second frame, the Golden Eagles came back from a late 18-17 deficit to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-23 win. The third set went to extra time, and a kill off the hand of sophomore Will Flohr and a Messiah service error clinched the 26-24 victory and a three-set sweep for the Golden Eagles.
Leading the way for St. Joseph's was the three-pronged attack of sophomore Matthew Amberge (13 kills), Paul Curaro (12 kills) and Kyle Biggers (10 kills). Biggers' hitting percentage of .571 proved to be a team-best.
Senior Tyler Jones dished out a game-high 38 assists.
SJC 3, SUNY Poly 0
After taking the first set 25-21, SJC erased a 23-20 deficit late in the second to take the frame by the score of 27-25.
With the score at 16-15 in the third, the Golden Eagles rattled off four-straight points to go up 20-15 en route to a 25-18 victory and their second 3-0 sweep of the afternoon.
Curaro (13 kills) and Amberge (11) powered the SJC offense, which generated 37 kills, yet again. Curaro also was credited with a game-best 13 digs. Jones picked up 32 assists.
At the tournament's conclusion, Curaro and Biggers were included in the All-Tournament Team.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, February 15 when they host Lehman College for a non-conference contest. Match time is set for 7:00 pm.
