Men’s Volleyball Splits at Home on Thursday

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball split a non-conference tri-match inside the Danzi Center on Thursday evening, falling to Hunter College, 3-1, before sweeping New Jersey City University in the closer.

The split sees the Golden Eagles move to 15-7 on the year. The Hawks improve to 13-6 as the Gothic Knights slip to 5-9.

Hunter 3, SJC 1

After two subpar performances in the first and second sets, in which SJC dropped 25-16 and 25-14 decisions, respectively, the Golden Eagles erased a late 21-18 deficit to take the third frame by the score of 28-26.

In the fourth, SJC, with a chance to force a fifth set, squandered a 25-24 lead and eventually dropped a 29-27 decision, resulting in a 3-1 defeat.

In a match that saw the hosts put down 20 kills, sophomore Paul Curaro recorded a game-high 20 kills. Sophomores Will Flohr and Kyle Biggers went for 12 and 10 kills, respectively.

Senior Michael Barfield dished out a team-high 34 assists and junior Danny McNamara was credited with 18 digs.

SJC 3, NJCU 0

After cruising to a 25- 9 win in set one, SJC was met by stiffer competition in the second and third sets but ultimately won 25-15 and 25-14, respectively.

Curaro paced the Golden Eagles once again, posting a game-high 11 kills. Flohr contributed eight kills and seven digs.

Barfield's 32 assists were a game-high, as were McNamara's nine digs.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, March 20 when they hit the road to face St. Joseph's College (Brkln) in a Skyline Conference contest. Action kicks off at 7:00 pm.
