Cross Country Runs Away with Another Great Effort at ECAC's

Bristol, R.I. — After winning the Skyline Conference Championship on October 27 (the men's fourth consecutive win and the women's seventh win in eight years), the Golden Eagles cross country program went on to compete in the ECAC Regionals at Colt State Park. With outstanding performances, the women placed eighth out of 48 Division III teams and the men placed 20th out of 46.

Brittany Guttieri (Oakdale, N.Y./ Connetquot) was the 20th person out of 327 to cross the finish line for the women on the 6000-meter course, with a time of 23:24. AnnMarie Zigrosser (Bayport, N.Y./ St. John the Baptist) was not far behind, placing 29th with a time of 23:44.  Lauren Waka (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./ Lake Ronkonkoma) and Caitlyn Ryan (Farmingville, N.Y./ Sachem East) finished 42nd and 56th, respectively. The Lady Eagles amassed a total of 260 points in their impressive performance against some tough competition.

On the men's 8000-meter course, Brian Wersan (Holbrook, N.Y./ Sachem North) was the fifth athlete to cross the finish line out of 327 total competitors with a time of 26:07.  Wersan's teammate Ryan Schimmel (Lindenhurst, N.Y./ Lindenhurst) finished only minutes later in 121st place with a time of 28:28. Nick Diaz (Hauppauge, N.Y./ Hauppauge) and John Antonacci (Blue Point, N.Y./ Bayport-Blue Point) stuck together until the end, finishing only one second apart, 169th and 170th place, respectively.

The Golden Eagles cross country program, which dominated in every challenge they faced this past 2013 season, has continued, unfailingly, to perform at a high level in their post season events.  Both the men and women will compete in the NCAA Regionals on November 16 at Letchworth State Park in Castile, N.Y.
