Softball 3-1 in Skyline Weekend Action - Senior Day Pics

Patchogue, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's College softball team (17-13, Skyline 7-5) had a successful weekend, going 3-1, against conference opponents, Sage (19-12, Skyline 7-5) and Mount Saint Vincent (8-24, Skyline 0-12).

On Saturday, SJC celebrated Senior Day as the Lady Eagles split the doubleheader with the Gators dropping the first game 6-4, and then held on the win the second game, 3-2. In the first game, the ladies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, off an unconventional two-run fielder's choice by starting pitcher Cassie Martinez (Centereach, N.Y. / Middle Country). Sage scored a run the top of the fourth and fifth to cut the lead to 3-2. A solo homerun by Alyssa Sieber (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) put St. Joseph's up 4-2 going into the top of the seventh. The blast by Sieber was the first Eagles homerun at their new home field.  The Gators would rally to score four runs in the final inning to give them the game one victory.

In the second game, St. Joseph's found success behind the strong pitching of junior Julia De Carmine (Holtsville, N.Y. / Sachem East). De Carmine pitched a complete game, allowing only two earned runs, and striking out six. Freshman Nicole Reda (Saint James, N.Y. / Our Lady of Mercy) went 3-for-3 while scoring one run. Alyssa Sieber drove in two of the Eagles three runs in the 3-2 win.

On Sunday, the Lady Eagles picked up where they left off the previous day, by sweeping the Dolphins. In the first game, Julia De Carmine got the start and pitched another complete game, going eight innings, allowed two earned runs, and struck out eight. Senior shortstop Courtney Frisina (Smithtown, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) led the way for St. Joseph's with a lead-off homer and drove in two runs to seal thw win in extra innings. She would finish the game 2-for-4 with three RBI's in the 7-4 win.

The second game would be less dramatic for St. Joseph's. With Cassie Martinez on the mound, the Golden Eagles offense exploded for 10 runs. Julia De Carmine (second base), freshman centerfielder Julieanne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y. / Bethpage), and junior leftfielder Gina Moscatelli (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) combined for five hits, three runs, and six RBI. Cassie Martinez pitched five innings of shutout ball allowing only seven hits, and struck out four as the Lady Eagles soared to a 10-0 victory.

Up next for St. Joseph's is a non-conference doubleheader against Kean University (19-11) on Thursday.
