Softball Falls to Poly & Short of Skyline Tourney

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College softball team (17-17, Skyline 7-7) were eliminated from Skyline Conference playoff contention on Saturday, by the Fighting Blue Jays of NYU-Polytechnic (27-9, Skyline 13-1). The women fell a game short behind the final playoff spot held onto by Old Westbury (22-14, Skyline 8-6).

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Fighting Blue Jays shut out the Lady Eagles by a score of 13-0. The only two hits the Eagles recorded were from freshman third baseman Gianna Gulli (Mount Sinai, N.Y. / Mount Sinai) and sophomore second baseman Julia De Carmine (Holtsville, N.Y. / Sachem East).

In the second game, St. Joseph's hung around with the first place Blue Jays. The score was tied 2-2 after two innings with runs coming from an error by the Blue Jays first baseman and an RBI double by Alyssa Sieber (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa). NYU-Poly tacked on two more in the top of the third and fourth to go up 6-2, but the Lady Eagles answered back with two in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman outfielder Tara Bernocco(Islip, N.Y. / Islip) tripled to right center in the fifth to score Courtney Frisina (Smithtown, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) and De Carmine's sacrifice fly scored Bernocco to cut the lead to 6-4. The Blue Jays scored two more in the top of the sixth and held on for the 8-4 victory thus dashing the Eagles playoff hopes.

The next game for St. Joseph's is a matchup against St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn (16-9) on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
