Softball Wins ECAC Metro Tournament to End 2012 Season

Galloway, N.J. – St. Joseph's College (23-19) defeated The Sage Colleges (29-17), 5-4, in the championship game of the 2012 ECAC Metro Tournament.  The victory marks the softball program's first ECAC tournament championship in their first-ever trip to the competition.

The Golden Eagles earlier in the day lost to Sage, 4-0, with the Gators facing elimination as they had already lost one contest on Saturday to Old Westbury.  The tournament was double-elimination format, with a team getting sent home if they lost twice.  The Eagles came into Sunday's first contest with an unblemished ledger, and needed to beat Sage once to take home the crown.

Sophomore pitcher Cassie Martinez (Centereach, N.Y./Middle Country) drove the team through their first three wins with stellar performances, shutting down Rutgers-Camden, Richard Stockton and Old Westbury and ended the week 3-1 with a 1.17 ERA over 30 innings and 27 strikeouts.

Junior Julia De Carmine (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) picked up the victory in the final game as she went seven innings and allowed only two earned runs.  She led the team in batting with a .438 average (7-for-16) a team-high four runs scored, three stolen bases and a .526 on-base percentage.

The Eagles' Nicole Reda (St. James, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament as she had two doubles and two RBI's and hit .313 in five games, In the final game, the freshman had an RBI and scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth inning.

Courtney Frisina (Smithtown, N.Y./St. Anthony's) concluded her senior season batting .353 (6-for-17) for the tournament.
