SJC Softball to Retire Jennifer Martinez’s Uniform Number on April 6

Patchogue, N.Y. – Former Golden Eagle pitcher Jennifer Martinez, a multiple-time NCAA statistical champion and record holder, will have her uniform number "10" retired and displayed on the softball field's outfield fence during a ceremony between games of the team's Skyline Conference doubleheader vs. Farmingdale State College on Sunday, April 6.

Martinez, St. Joseph's College's (SJC) most decorated alumni-athlete, garnered local, national and international recognition during her tenure with the Golden Eagles softball team from 2006-2008.  The Bay Shore, N.Y. native and Bellport High School graduate holds nine separate NCAA pitching records and won nine NCAA individual statistical hitting and pitching championship crowns in a three-year span.

The star hurler rewrote the SJC records books while with the team and holds marks in wins, ERA, strikeouts and most other major pitching categories.  She was also a standout offensive performer and owns many of SJC's offensive marks including hits and batting average.

The three-time Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Year, set NCAA records for strikeouts in a game (24) and strikeouts in a regulation seven-inning game twice (21), and pitched four perfect games and 11 no-hitters during her career.

Martinez also played for several years on the Puerto Rican national softball team which lost to Venezuela in the last qualifying game for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Please join head coach Al Sciangula, his coaching staff and the 2014 Golden Eagles as they honor the top player in the history of the St. Joseph's College softball program on April 6.  The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m.

This event will be held in conjunction with Little League Softball Days in which SJC will team up with local Little League teams to participate in various pregame and postgame ceremonies and activities.
