Lady Eagles Sweep Doubleheader From NJCU’s Gothic Knights

Jersey City, N.J. – The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (10-5) outscored the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City (2-14) 22-4 in two road games on Friday, 8-2 and 14-2.

Despite the high-scoring affairs for the Eagles, they got off to a slow start offensively. The Eagles didn't get on the board until the third inning of game one when Samantha Carcano (Centereach, N.Y./Newfield) and Cheyenne Raimondi (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) drove in runs in the Eagles two-run inning as Mallory McClafferty (Bellport, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) continued to mow down the Gothic Knights lineup.

The Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth and Raimondi came through once again with a bunt RBI single. Julianne Tierney (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) stepped up to the plate and drilled an RBI double to left field. McClafferty helped her own cause with an RBI single and Tara Bernocco (Islip, N.Y./Islip) drove in a run on an infield single as the Eagles extended their lead to 7-0 after the five-run fifth. The Knights got two runs back in the sixth but the Eagles would tack another run on and McClafferty shut the door on game one against NJCU.

Carcano finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and Tierney went 2-for-3 with an RBI. McClafferty went the distance giving up six hits and two runs, picking up the victory.

The Eagles wasted no time kick starting the offense in game two as Melanie Boccio (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) drove in two runs with an RBI double but the Gothic Knights fired right back with two runs of their own to tie the game up entering the second inning. The Eagles brought another run across in the second and Amanda Eremita (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) shut the Knights down in the bottom half of the inning.

The Lady Eagles scored five unearned runs in the third inning.  With the bases loaded, Lindsey Corriss (Sayville, N.Y./St. Anthony's) drove a bases clearing double to centerfield to cap off the Eagles inning. SJC tacked on three more runs in the fourth including a solo homerun by Tierney and in the fifth the Eagles put two more on the board to defeat the Gothic Knights in five innings by the 10-run mercy rule.

Tierney was 4-for-4 with four runs scored and the solo shot.  Boccio went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored and Megan Leun went 2-for-3 with three RBI's and three runs scored.  Eremita went five innings, surrendering five hits and one earned run.
